Finding Your Simple Joys

A couple months ago, I was talking to a friend about random things that made us happy. I’m not sure how it came up, but we went back and forth for a while listing out the things that brought us joy. Funny enough, the things we thought of weren’t big–on the contrary, they were very small, ordinary things that made us happy for no apparent reason. We began labeling them “simple joys,” and whenever we stumbled upon another one, we added it to our mental lists (or in my case, a Note on my phone because I can’t remember anything if I don’t write it down. Fact.) Since then, I’ve asked a number of people what their “simple joys” are just because it’s fun/a good conversation starter, plus I find you can learn a lot about a person from the small things that bring them joy.

Sim•ple joy /ˈsimpəl/ / joi/, noun: an object, feeling or experience that intrinsically brings you happiness, its mere existence in your life creates joy without ties to consequence or additional outcomes

Simple Joys are not overarching, “big picture” items that bring you happiness. For example, hanging out with friends/significant other, graduating from college, landing your dream job will obviously make you very happy, but they’re not categorized as Simple Joys. Simple Joys are the familiar, mundane and very specific things that you experience in your everyday life. They don’t take years to achieve or require a certain set of circumstances to work out–they just exist and bring you happiness.

Sam is a marketing professional in the Philly suburbs. When she’s not writing or working, she’s probably watching Grey’s Anatomy (or Villanova basketball #gocats) or online shopping.

This summer has been amazing. I’ve spent a ton of time with two of my closest friends, Haley and Kasia. We’ve frolicked through the streets of Philadelphia, obsessed over Friday Night Lights, conspired together to have the Universe shower us with good vibes and bonded over mozzarella sticks discussing the trials and tribulations of being a single, 20-something working in the communication industry. (Kasia here: RT all that–thank goodness for good friends).

It’s been inspiring to be surrounded by strong, like-minded women who have similar goals and ambitions but also are down to have a damn good time while we’re young.

The Art of Letting Go

People are funny. It seems impossible, but you can feel two totally different feelings at the exact same time. They contradict each other. They fight for space in your brain and in your heart. You think, “one of these feelings must be false. One is right and one is wrong.” But the reality is, you can hold one thing in each hand. And you may not understand how they flip back and forth with a dizzying speed–but here you are, grappling with all the feelings at the same time, with the same intensity.

It’s pretty annoying. Or maybe it’s just living.

I realized something about people recently. I was talking to a friend who was going through a similar situation I had gone through in the past. It was one of those times where, as a friend, you give your best advice–advice you often can easily give but seldom take yourself. She was struggling with the two contradicting feelings that we’ve all had at one point: the balance of wanting to let go but also to hang on. And I realized that 1. we all want to let something go but 2. we’re all desperate to hang onto it anyways.
