How To Simplify Your Life

One morning a few weeks ago, I opened one of my dresser drawers and was immediately in a bad mood. My workout clothes drawer was a mess again, with t-shirts haphazardly folded & leggings mixed up in sports bras. As the Type-A/neat freak I am, that disorganization instantly pissed me off, thus I started my day very, very cranky.

There were a few other things pissing me off that morning (it was a bad morning), so I decided to write them all down as a hate-list (try it sometime, it helps). Turns out, the stupid/little things that were irritating me I had complete control over to change. Shocker, really. All the things that were pissing me off about had very simple solutions.

The next day, I ordered drawer organizers from Amazon. My messy workout clothes problem was fixed. Just like that.

As an adult, there are a lot of things you have to do. But I’m now in the mindset of making things easier for myself. If there’s something I absolutely hate doing, I try to find a way to make it better. Sometimes it means getting creative or spending a little bit of money, but it’s better than getting pissed off every day over stupid little things.

So below, I’ve listed everyday annoyances with easy solutions to make them more enjoyable. I’m not claiming that you’ll end up loving that chore you absolutely despise, but maybe it’ll make doing it a little better. Read on to simplify your life.

Finding Your Simple Joys

A couple months ago, I was talking to a friend about random things that made us happy. I’m not sure how it came up, but we went back and forth for a while listing out the things that brought us joy. Funny enough, the things we thought of weren’t big–on the contrary, they were very small, ordinary things that made us happy for no apparent reason. We began labeling them “simple joys,” and whenever we stumbled upon another one, we added it to our mental lists (or in my case, a Note on my phone because I can’t remember anything if I don’t write it down. Fact.) Since then, I’ve asked a number of people what their “simple joys” are just because it’s fun/a good conversation starter, plus I find you can learn a lot about a person from the small things that bring them joy.

Sim•ple joy /ˈsimpəl/ / joi/, noun: an object, feeling or experience that intrinsically brings you happiness, its mere existence in your life creates joy without ties to consequence or additional outcomes

Simple Joys are not overarching, “big picture” items that bring you happiness. For example, hanging out with friends/significant other, graduating from college, landing your dream job will obviously make you very happy, but they’re not categorized as Simple Joys. Simple Joys are the familiar, mundane and very specific things that you experience in your everyday life. They don’t take years to achieve or require a certain set of circumstances to work out–they just exist and bring you happiness.

The Smile Tag // I’m Happiest When…

One of my favorite things about being a blogger is meeting other awesome people who love to blog too. I was recently nominated for “The Smile Tag” from one of my favorite bloggers, Kali from Ink On My Hands. (Definitely check her out–she always features the best beauty/style trends & I love her honesty and authenticity!) The Smile Tag was originally created by Ciarra Loren, and all you have to do is share a picture of you smiling (which is easy for me because I have TONS of smiley photos). I figured this would be a nice chance to share all the things that make me the happiest. Hopefully this will make you smile a little bit too!
